WHO: Sally Mann is an American photographer who was born in 1951 in Lexington Virginia. Her father was a general and her mom worked at a local book store. She began her work as a photographer when she was sixteen years old. She used her dad's 5 by 7 camera and that is what fueled her love for photography. She was also neglected by her mother who barely came around which could have been the influence to all of her photos. She also loved to ride horses and later in her life broke her back from falling off a horse.
WHAT: All of her work is film and in black in white because that is what they had during that time period. The type of photos she took were consevertial because she took photos of her kids nude, with cigarettes, and other photos that shocked the public. Her work was very powerful and always made a statement.
WHY: She claims that why she took up film photography is to spend type alone with her boyfriend in the dark room. This grew into a passion that later became her life. her work has been in many gallery's and art exhibits that are still around today.
When: Most of her photographs were taken between 1967- the 1990's. Around the 1990's and 2000's Mann started taking up her love for writing and wrote around 11 books and many poems. She also graduated high school in 1669 and attended Bennington Collage. Today she is still alive at the age of 66 and has not had any recent work released since 2010, which was self portraits that were showed in the Virginia museum of fine arts.
